How to upgrade your electricity meter

This blog offers some practical help, following up on my previous blog about metering, on how to change your electricity meter.

If you have an old analogue meter with wheel and dials then it is likely to be more than 20 years old, poorly calibrated and should be changed.

A modern meter is smaller with digital display and flashing LED.

(Example below: Itron ACE1000 SM0 )

First step is to talk with your utility provider, using your account reference and meter number. You should make a 'Customer Requested Change'. Check at the same time as to whether your meter is due for upgrade as part of their meter change programme.

Second step Your utility provider should arrange for one of their metering provider companies (e.g. Siemens Metering) to swop the meter. This is a quick process. You are likely to be charged a small one-off fee to change the meter, which is likely to be less than £100 including VAT.

Third step The metering installation company should contact you to arrange the visit to change your meter and compete the work. The cost that you authorised will be added to yoru next bill.
